Cameron Norrie keeps ATP Finals hopes alive by ‘staying solid’ in Stockholm
Cameron Norrie remains in the running for the ATP Finals after coming from behind to reach the quarter-finals of the Stockholm Open.
The world number 14 defeated Aslan Karatsev 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, 6-4 to advance at the ATP 250 event. The Brit is in pursuit of his third title of the season after trophies in Delray Beach and Lyon.
“It was a tough match,” Norrie said. “Every time Aslan was down he raised his level and he really stole that first set from me. I had a couple of set points and I didn’t execute as well as I could have done in the tiebreak.
“I stayed solid and I was a bit frustrated in the third set but I managed to claw it back. I feel good and fresh.”
Cameron Norrie twice served for the opening set and had a set point in the tiebreak before surrendering it to Karatsev. He is currently 12th in the ATP Live Race to Turin on 2400 points.
If he hopes to make a second career appearance at the elite event he will need some strong results to catch up to seventh-placed Felix Auger-Aliassime and take that final qualifying spot. He faces Holger Rune next in Sweden for a spot in the semi-finals.
Unfortunately for Norrie, his best Slam result this year came at Wimbledon. He reached the semi-finals which ordinarily would have earned him 720 ranking points. However, thanks to the ATP stripping points from the event, he gained nothing on his tally from the tournament.
