Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark also secured her place in the next round thanks to a 6-3 6-0 win against Chan Yung-jan. The second seed will next face Russian Ksenia Pervak.

Fourth seed Sybille Bammer was given a thorough examination by Urszula Radwanska before winning in three sets, while India’s Sania Mirza came through a near two-hour test of attrition to see off Nicha Lertpitaksinchai 7-6 (7/4) 7-5.

Ivana Lisjak came out on top in the battle of the qualifiers as the Croatian overcame Kazakhstan’s Sesil Karatantcheva 6-2 4-6 6-3.

Ukrainian qualifier Yuliya Beygelzimer, Portugal’s Neuza Silva and Yaroslava Shvedova also advanced.
