Caroline Wozniacki slumped out of the WTA Championships in Istanbul after a straight sets defeat to Petra Kvitova.

The world No.1, who lost to Kim Clijsters in the final of last year’s tournament in Doha, had to have her blood pressure checked after the first set as she fell to a 6-4 6-2 defeat against the reigning Wimbledon champion, who consequently sealed her place in the semi-finals in Turkey.

“I tried my best, but my body didn’t want to do the things I asked it,” Wozniacki said. “What I told my brain didn’t go to my body.

“A lot of things have been happening this week. It’s just unfortunate that my body has been feeling tired. To get sick now is not the best time if you want to beat the top players.”

“That’s not to say Petra would not have won the match anyway. She has been playing very well and she deserves to have won her two matches.”

Guaranteed a spot in the semi-final after winning each of her opening Red Group matches, Kvitova has the power to determine who else from her group reaches the last four. If Kvitova concedes a set against Agnieszka Radwanska on Friday, the Pole will go through, but if she wins in straight sets, Vera Zvonareva will take up a spot in the semi-finals.

In the white group, Victoria Azarenka comfortably defeated Li Na 6-2 6-2 to maintain her 100 per cent record after two matches, while Sam Stosur and Li Na will face off on Friday for the chance to join Azarenka in the semi-finals.

“The crowd here in Istanbul makes me want to play well and show them some good tennis,” said the Belarusian, who has already bettered her effort at the WTA Championships in 2010, when she won a solitary match, against Jelena Jankovic.
