Some players hate the physical work they have to do in their training, but Caroline Wozniacki is not among them. The 21-year-old Dane is one of the fittest players on the tour and says she enjoys working hard.

“I put a lot of things into my fitness,” Wozniacki said. “I’ve always done. I’ve always prioritised my fitness almost more than my tennis, to be honest, and my training. From a young age I’ve done all sorts of sports, so I think that’s helped my body as well develop muscles that you never thought you had.  I think that’s important in the game.  Knock on wood, I hope that I’ll just keep healthy for the rest of my career.”

Even at tournaments Wozniacki’s daily training routine is gruelling. “After I wake up I’ll probably go for a running session,” she said. “Depending on how my shape is, I’ll either go for a long run or do intervals, depending also on where in the season we are. Then I’ll go and play some tennis, probably for one and a half hours or so.  Then I’ll have a little rest, play another hour of tennis afterwards, go to the gym and do some running again for maybe an hour and a half.”

Although Wozniacki would rather use the treadmill, her physical trainers prefer her to run outside. When she is back home in Monte Carlo that usually means using a running track or going on the beach. Wozniacki said she had seen Italy’s Simone Bolelli on the track in the principality’s stadium but had not bumped into other Monaco-based players while out running.

The former world No 1 said she actually enjoyed the physical part of her training. “I know that there are a lot of players who hate it,” she said. “For me maybe it doesn’t feel great while you’re doing it, but afterwards I feel very satisfied with myself.”
