Wozniacki, who reached the US Open final in September, began the defence of her title with a comfortable 6-4 6-1 win over Japan’s Ayumi Morita.

It was a good day all round for the seeds, with second seed and former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli beating Galina Voskoboeva 6-3 7-5.

Third seed Samantha Stosur defeated Russian Alexandra Panova 6-2 6-4, and sixth seed Aleksandra Wozniak also won in straight sets against qualifier Sophie Ferguson.

There was disappointment for the home crowd as veteran Kimiko Date Krumm, who had received a wild card, lost in three sets to American Jill Craybas.
