Williams, the defending champion, eased past Galina Voskoboeva 6-3 6-0, while Azarenka dropped just one more game than the American as she dispatched Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak 6-3 6-1.

Caroline Wozniacki, whose form and section of the draw ought to see her reach the semi-finals, raced through her 6-1 6-2 victory over Chanelle Scheepers, while Angelique Kerber was forced to dig deep to see off Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 6-4 2-6 6-3.

Petra Kvitova, Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic and Sabine Lisicki all progressed in straight sets, as did fellow seeds Alize Cornet and Sorana Cirstea.

But an emotional Errani was left bereft after her 6-3 6-1 defeat by her Davis Cup team-mate, admitting that she was struggling with life at the top of the women’s game.

"I'm feeling too much pressure," the 26-year-old confessed. "I don't know why, but I'm not enjoying going on the courts, and that is the worst thing a player can have.

"If you go there and you fight and you lose, not my problem – but the problem is if you go there and you are not fighting."
