Serena Williams admitted she felt ‘way off’ after being bounced out of Wimbledon in round four by Marion Bartoli.

The 13-time Grand Slam champion, who only returned to competition in Eastbourne two weeks ago after recovering from a pulmonary embolism, went down 6-3 7-6 to the 2007 Wimbledon finalist, and admitted she had struggled to find her range.

“I definitely felt way off today. I missed so many shots,” said Williams, who refused to be content with a fourth round finish despite her lengthy absence from competition.

“I never came here thinking that I would lose, that’s not my attitude, “ she said, adding: “You win some and you lose some. Today happened to be the one that slipped under me.”

And of her opponent, she added: “She should always play like this and she would be in the top five minimum. Where is this player throughout the rest of the year?”

Sister Venus didn’t have a much better time of it either, going down 6-2 6-3 to Tsventana Pironkova, who had defeated her in the 2010 quarter-finals.

“Definitely not our best day,” said Venus of her and Serena’s efforts. “We both envisaged this day going a little bit different,” she said, and summing up her display, added: “I just didn’t put the ball in the court, simple as that. I seem not to have my good days against her.”

World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki followed the Williams sisters out of the tournament, falling 1-6 7-6 7-5 to Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova, who completed an all-European quarter-final line up.
