Williams: I’ve never felt better

Serena Williams has a message that might strike fear into the hearts of some of her biggest rivals. “I’ve never felt better,” Williams said in the wake of her double triumph at Wimbledon. “I feel really awesome and amazing. I’m a little tired from coming down from being so happy, but I feel like everything is going great.”

Williams took her tally of Grand Slam singles titles to 14 with her victory over Agnieszka Radwanska at the All England Club, while her triumph alongside her sister, Venus, was her 13th in doubles.

Asked whether the Williams family constituted the greatest ever tennis dynasty, Serena said: “I haven’t thought about that, but I definitely think it’s true. And we want to continue doing more. I want to keep doing more. I want to keep playing well. I don’t think about any legacy at all. I’m definitely going to be playing for many more years to come.”

Serena has achieved her latest successes following a remarkable recovery from serious health problems. After cutting her foot on broken glass two summers ago following her fourth singles triumph at Wimbledon she was out of the game for a year. Not only did she have two operations on her foot but she also had to have a large haematoma removed from her stomach after a blood clot had travelled from a leg to her lungs.

Considering that she has also had lengthy periods out of the sport in the past because of knee trouble, did she ever think how many titles she might have won if she had stayed injury-free? “I try not to think about it,” she said. “I probably would have won several more Grand Slams had I not run into everything that happened. You never know why those things happen. There’s a reason for everything. I feel like I’m living in this particular moment. Every time I win, in every particular match, I’m happy.”
