Williams hits back to win in Rome

Williams looked to be on course for an easy win after taking the first set 6-2 before her opponent hit back to take the second set 6-4. But Williams recovered to win the deciding set 6-2.

Also in the second round, sixth seed Victoria Azarenka, of Belarus, defeated Japan’s Ayumi Morita of Japan who had lost the opening set 6-0 when she retired.

In the first round, Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki defeated Hungary’s Agnes Szavay 6-3 6-2.

There were also first round wins for Aleksandra Wozniak, Alize Cornet, Virginie Razzano, Kateryna Bondarenko, Jie Zheng, Anna Chakvetadze, Agnieszka Radwanska and Elena Vesnina.
