The 27-year-old American, who returned to the top of the rankings with victory in last month’s Australian Open, triumphed 6-1 6-2 in 58 minutes.

Williams, who is seeking her third victory in the tournament and her 34th career title, will play Frenchwoman Emilie Loit in the last eight.

Jelena Jankovic, the world number three, progressed from the second round with a 6-0 3-6 6-2 win over China’s Li Na.

The Serbian second seed had her serve broken six times in the match but prevailed in one hour 38 minutes and will meet Alize Cornet in the next round.

Frenchwoman Cornet bounced back from a poor first set to claim a 1-6 6-4 6-2 win over Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova.

Former world number one Amelie Mauresmo was the third Frenchwoman through to the last eight, defeating Romania’s Monica Niculescu 6-1 6-2.

Eighth seed Mauresmo, whose last title came in Antwerp in 2007, is a two-time champion in Paris and has reached the final on another three occasions and will meet Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the next round.
