Garbine Muguruza French Open 2020

Weary Muguruza bows out of Wimbledon

The Roland Garros champion admitted feeling lethargic after Muguruza was beaten 6-3 6-2 by the Slovakian qualifier inside an hour.

“I think my energy was missing a little bit today,” she said. “From yesterday I felt already a little bit tired. I feel a little bit empty, and I start to be sick.”

However, the Spaniard refused to take anything away from Cepelova, who upset Simona Halep in the first round at Wimbledon last year.

“I think she played great, with no fear,” she said. “She was trying a lot of stuff that was working. My energy was not really there.  I was trying, but didn’t work at all.”

After winning her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, Muguruza back on the court within days at the Mallorca Open.

“To start playing after French Open [in] Mallorca was too early to start,” she admitted, “then practising hard to come here.  I think was a little bit too much maybe.

“I’m going to learn that you really need to concentrate on how to recover, and don’t reach a moment where your energy is too low, especially at a Grand Slam. [Against] opponents that want to beat you so much, you’ve got to be ready.  You cannot go out there not at your best.”
