Stanislas Wawrinka has announced his split with coach Peter Lundgren after just 15 months together.

The hero for Switzerland this weekend after edging Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt in five sets to clinch victory for his side in the Davis Cup, the world No.19 began working with Swedish-born Lundgren back in July 2010, but hasn’t kicked on as expected after cracking the top 10 back in 2008.

Under Lundgren, the 26-year-old right-hander won one of his three career titles (in Chennai this year) and also managed to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final at the 2010 US Open, as well as making another appearance in the last eight four months later at this year’s Australian Open.

Lundgren, who reached No.23 in the world during his playing days, is best known for coaching Wawrinka’s compatriot Roger Federer from 2000-2003 and also guided the likes of Marat Safin, Marcos Baghdatis and Grigor Dimitrov.

Despite his mentor’s credentials, Wawrinka was unsatisfied with his progress and called time on their relationship.

“He [Lundgren] played a major role in my career and I am deeply grateful,” Wawrinka wrote on his official facebook page. “We have had a lot of success and fun working together, I can’t thank him enough.”
