Watson hasn’t played since a first round loss to Ayumi Morita in Miami over four weeks ago and the world No.39 admits she is unsure when she will return to tour action.

“It’s hard to tell,” the 20 year old told tennishead as she announced her new role as an ambassador for HSBC. “It’s just based on how I feel. There’s no set date. Some people with glandular fever are out for a year and some are out for three months. It just depends but I’m definitely feeling better.”

Watson, who reached the third round of the Australian Open at the beginning of the year, hasn’t exercised since her diagnosis but she is hoping to begin some physical work in the next week, starting with a bike ride and possibly some light jogging.

“I’m just so bored now,” said Watson. “I’m desperate to start doing something. I saw some friends when they were home for Easter but now they’re all back so my Dad is just looking after me at home.

“I’m watching everything going. I’m watching The Voice, The Jonathan Ross Show, I’m watching Eastenders, all the BBC dramas, everything.”

The Guernsey native is also taking positives from her time on the sidelines, admitting her illness has caused her to appreciate her career now more than ever before.

“You know, it can get tough and really long and exhausting but no matter what you do in life it’s not going to be easy," said Watson. "You’re going to have your ups and downs so I might as well be doing something I love so then I’ll look back and reflect and I’ll think actually tennis is pretty awesome.”

Heather Watson makes her debut as an ambassador for HSBC this year, joining former British No 1 Tim Henman, who has been in the role since 2008. The pair will work across HSBC’s Wimbledon activity throughout 2013 and during The Championships themselves.
