The 109th-ranked Volandri failed a drug test last March at Indian Wells when a high concentration of the asthma drug salbutamol was found in his system.

The International Tennis Federation ruled on Friday that the amount of salbutamol discovered in his test went beyond therapeutic needs.

Volandri’s suspension is effective immediately and will end on April 14, meaning he is ineligible for the Australian Open, where he was to face Mario Ancic in the opening round next week.
