The Swiss won 6-3 7-5 to send her 19-year-old opponent crashing out on the first day of the Uzbekistan tournament.

Eighth seed Galiana Voskoboeva, playing in front of her home crowd, survived a three-setter against Portugal’s Neuza Silva to win her first match in four attempts on home soil 6-4 3-6 6-4.

“Winning my first round match is pretty satisfying, but I’m happier to have broken the Tashkent jinx. I had lost three matches in a row here,” she told www.sonyericsson.com.

“I always seem to play three sets and lose. I feel I’ve conquered that mentally this time. Now I’ll just take it one match at a time. My priority was the first round.”
