Vinciguerra ousts Serra

The 28-year-old Vinciguerra, now ranked a lowly 460 in the world after a back injury, has twice finished runner-up in the event and took just under two and a half hours to see off the Italian.

Another seed to fall at the first stage on the opening day was Belgian veteran Christophe Rochus. The seventh seed took the first set over Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili but was ultimately well beaten 4-6 6-1 6-0.

In another minor upset, Romania’s Victor Crivoi proved dominant against world number 68 Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, taking just 76 minutes to wrap up a 6-0 6-4 success.
