The 35-year-old, who moved to No.7 following her win over Karolina Pliskova in Zhuhai is the oldest player to be ranked inside the top 10 since Martina Navratilova in January 1995.

Williams, who dropped as low as No.137 in 2012 during a seven-month layoff after being diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome, reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and US Open this year.

She ended the year with victory in Zhuhai, coming from a set down in both of her round-robin matches against Madison Keys and Zheng Saisai; comfortably beating Roberta Vinci in the semi-finals before a hard-fought 7-5 7-6(6) win over Pliskova in the final.

"It's a great thing to be top 10 now with the level of the game, but I'm still very hungry. I'm ready for more," said Williams, who first broke into the top 10 in March 1998 aged 17. "I've had so many experiences in tennis that I still expect a lot from myself. So I'm very happy to be moving forward, but I also want to continue, and not stop here."
