The 28-year-old world number six broke the Russian five times in recording a convincing 6-2 6-2 win in just over an hour at Victoria Park to round off her only preparation ahead of the trip to the first grand slam of the year in Melbourne.

“Last year I had such a great rhythm and it was wonderful to end the season in the way I did, and I defiantly feel at a similar level now,” said Williams.

“Next week I am just going to keep training and keep a positive outlook – that’s the whole game plan. Before the Australian Open I want to get better, faster and tougher – all of the above in one week.”

Williams’ win helped Team Americas claim victory over Team Russia in the Fed Ex Cup style tournament after Argentinian world number 49 Gisela Dulko had beaten Anna Chakvetadze 3-6 6-4 6-4.
