The 59-year-old was appointed by the Argentinian Tennis Association last week as the successor to Mancini, who led the Albicelestes to two Davis Cup finals in 2006 and 2008 but stepped down after they lost this year’s final 3-1 at home to Spain.

Vazquez, who previously captained the Davis Cup team from 1986 to 1988, is thrilled to have retaken the reins and does not intend to change too much in terms of personnel. “This spell will mean a continuity of the previous process,” he said.

He added: “Almost all the players who have been playing will continue and we’ll surely add some youngsters.

“Being the captain of the team is an honour for me, but it’s easy because the players and coaches who compete every day have the difficult role.”

The new captain hinted he would use different players for singles and doubles matches, whereas Mancini often selected the same players for both.

Vazquez will fly to Australia in mid-January alongside co-captain Ricardo ‘Caio’ Rivera to meet the Argentinian players in the Australian Open ahead of the Davis Cup first-round clash with Holland from March 6-8.

“We’ll talk to seven or eight players who are possible to be named for the tie,” said Rivera, who also coaches the Fed Cup team.
