USA doubles halve Spain advantage

The US went into the tie knowing a defeat would signal the end of their reign after losing both singles matches on Friday, but makeshift pairing Mardy Fish and Mike Bryan breathed fresh life into the semi-final with a 4-6 6-4 6-3 4-6 6-4 win.

Fish, playing in his first Davis Cup match in four years, was only given his chance after Bob Bryan withdrew due to a shoulder injury, breaking up his top-ranked partnership with twin brother Mike.

However, Fish played his part to the full as the US halved Spain’s advantage and set up an enthralling final day in the singles, when world number one Rafael Nadal is set to meet US hope Andy Roddick and David Ferrer is due to face Sam Querrey.
