The sixth-seeded Russian was the top-ranked victim in first-round play as he fell 6-1 6-1 to Slovakia’s Dominik Hrbaty.

In other first-round action, Rainer Schuettler defeated Igor Kunitsyn 6-2 6-3 and Victor Hanescu saw off Evgeny Korolev 6-1 6-2.

Andy Murray is the top seed here after winning his second consecutive ATP Masters Series title in Madrid on Sunday.

The 21-year-old, who has moved up to fourth in the world rankings, is the defending champion here, defeating Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in the final here last year.

To win another title here, Murray may have to beat Russian Nikolay Davydenko, the number two seed, who is playing on his home turf.

Davydenko will be looking to rebound from a second-round loss to American Robby Ginepri in Spain.

Verdasco is the number three seed, while the rest of top eight is comprised of Russians Mikhail Youzhny (4) and Marat Safin (8) and Croats Marin Cilic (5) and Mario Ancic (7).
