Big-hitting Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga says he is capable of becoming world No.1 in 2009 and that he is confident of winning the Australian Open.

Tsonga begins his 2009 playing schedule at the Brisbane International, which begins on January 4, and says he will be aiming high during the next 12 months.

When questioned about whether reaching the very top of the ATP rankings is a possibility Tsonga said: I hope it’s me, but I don’t know.

“I think there is a lot of good players and it’s going to be a war.”

Tsonga burst onto the world stage almost exactly 12 months ago when he reached the final of the Aussie Open only to lose in four sets to Serb Novak Djokovic.

Far from being satisfied with a grand slam runners-up spot, however, the Frenchman says he wants to go one better at the Melbourne major which begins on January 19.

“For me, it was very difficult to lose the final to Novak [last year],” Tsonga said.

“So it’s given me a lot of motivation for the rest of the year and now I hope I will win against him the next time.

“I’m confident [of winning the Australian Open] because I’ve had a very good preparation.
