The world No.8 has not played since he was forced to retire from his second-round match against Ernests Gulbis at Wimbledon.

Tsonga, who defeated Roger Federer en route to the semi-finals of the Masters 1000 event in 2011, is hopeful he will have recovered in time for the US Open, which starts on August 26.

"I'm sorry I cannot come to Montreal," Tsonga said. "The knee injury I suffered during Wimbledon requires me to continue my rehabilitation. I hope to be able to play at the US Open in late August."

Federer is also a doubt for the tournament with a back injury, while Maria Sharapova has already pulled out of the women’s event in Toronto with a hip problem.
