The Argentinian came within a whisker of beating world number one Rafael Nadal in Indian Wells but was totally outplayed on Saturday. Troicki will face lucky loser Bjorn Phau in an unlikely third-round clash.

The German was given a reprieve following Richard Gasquet’s injury and on Saturday he benefited from another withdrawal when Albert Montanes retired from their match trailing 6-4 2-0.

Fourth seed Andy Murray survived a major scare to reach the third round.

The British number one was hoping to build on his run to the final in Indian Wells last weekend but had to recover from a poor start to defeat Juan Monaco 4-6 6-3 6-2.

Eighth seed Fernando Verdasco had no problems breezing past qualifier Benjamin Becker 6-3 6-4 while 12th seed Fernando Gonzalez was a 6-4 6-4 winner over Igor Kunitsyn.

David Ferrer, seeded 11th, withstood a spirited challenge from giant qualifier John Isner to triumph 6-3 3-6 6-2 while 18th seed Radek Stepanek also dropped a set before beating Bobby Reynolds 7-5 6-7 (3/7) 6-2.

Qualifier Frederico Gil beat 26th seed Ivo Karlovic 6-4 6-4 but Feliciano Lopez, seeded 32nd, hit back to defeat home hope Sam Querrey 6-7 (5/7) 7-5 6-2.

Igor Andreev, seeded 20th, was a 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 winner against Yen-hsun Lu while unpredictable Serb Janko Tipsarevic knocked out 30th seed Jurgen Melzer 6-4 6-3.

Stanislas Wawrinka was another seed to progress, the Swiss 16th seed beating Andreas Seppi 7-5 7-5.
