Medvedev, Zverev and Tsitsipas all support Netflix’s newly-announced tennis documentary series


Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are all excited to see the new Netflix tennis documentary series and feel it will benefit tennis by introducing the sport to a younger audience.

It was recently announced that film and television streaming service and production company Netflix would be producing a documentary series surrounding the professional tennis world.

Filming is currently underway in Melbourne and it is believed that 20-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic’s visa and deportation saga will be included in the series.

The streaming conglomerate have partnered with all four Grand Slam organisers, as well as the ATP and the WTA to bring a new tennis series to their streaming platform.

Netflix will have been buoyed on by the success of their other sports-related series, namely Sunderland ‘Til I Die, The Last Dance and Formula One: Drive to Survive.

These documentary series often provide insight into the world of the professional sport they cover, all the while remaining thoroughly entertaining. The latest iteration will offer a behind-the-scenes look at both the ATP and WTA Tours and all four Grand Slam tournaments.

The series will also be the first of its kind to equally show and promote both the men’s and women’s sport.

“I was the first person to know about that before any of you,” World number four Tsitsipas informed the press with a wry smirk.

“I’m very privileged to be in it. I’ve watched Drive to Survive. I instantly became a huge fan of Formula One. I’m extremely happy they’re bringing this to tennis and making something similar in that sense.”

Similarly, Alexander Zverev said “I think it’s [a] great thing for the ATP to try to promote the sport.

“I think tennis will gain younger fans through a Netflix documentary like Drive to Survive because [it] shows the inside of the sport, the pit lane, all that.

“I think the drama comes with it. I’m going to be very interested to see how it’s going to be with tennis because I am inside the locker room, I am inside with the players, so I know what it is like. It’s going to be interesting to see how much Netflix can show of that.”

Finally, World number two and reigning US Open champion Daniil Medvedev said “I liked Formula One before watching it, so it’s not like I watched it and now I’m a Formula One fan.

“It’s really cool. We can never know how it’s going to work out in tennis. We can only know after the first season is out. But I think it’s exciting.

“It’s great to bring more fans to the sport, to try at least, a younger generation maybe. They can see the inside a little bit.”
