The three most dangerous young players at Wimbledon 2019

The men’s singles at Wimbledon 2019 is set to be the most exciting and open tournament for years, but who are the lesser known players that could really crash the men’s singles party?

 

Wimbledon 2019 has all the makings of a classic with a great weather forecast combined with the mix of legends and rising stars battling it out on a unique surface. So who can we expect of the relatively less well-known players to shock everyone and make a name for themselves?

 

Felix Auger-Aliassime

Age: 18

World ranking: 21

After reaching the semi-finals of Queen’s and the final of Stuttgart this young talent from Canada is on the verge of something big, and Wimbledon could well be his stage.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, or FAA as he’s often known, has an all court game and incredible athleticism that allows him to cover the court and maintain his balance during even the most testing of rallies. This skill, plus an inner belief in his own ability and a growing confidence that he can beat the big boys, makes the No. 18 seed a real threat to go deep at Wimbledon 2019.

He has a tough draw with a potential third round clash against Gael Monfils followed buy a last 16 match against Novak Djokovic but don’t go writing off his chances just yet

 

Taylor Fritz

Age: 21

World ranking: 31

After winning for the first time in Eastbourne yesterday, this young, big hitting American will be on top of the world. Fritz can combine devastating power and shot making with a steely attitude that seems beyond his age of 21. Maybe it’s because he’s already married with a young child that Fritz doesn’t seem to get as flustered by the occasion as some other players his age.

His game is very well suited to grass as he’s got the reach, at 6 feet 4 inches, plus the speed of movement to stay in the rally on grass before he unleashes one of his big weapons.

If he can negotiate his way through a tricky first round encounter with Thomas Berdych then the draw looks decent, before he would face Nishikori in the last 16, then Federer in the quarter final.

 

Frances Tiafoe 

Age: 21

World ranking: 38

Unseeded this year but ranked at 38 in the world, this incredible athlete from Orlando in Florida will be relishing his chance to play on the green grass of SW19.

An all court player without a huge weapon, his ability to stay in a rally under intense pressure may well see him upset a big name this year at Wimbledon. His ‘never say die’ attitude will also mean that the match isn’t over until the last point is won.

A first round tie against No. 12 seed Fabio Fognini isn’t as tough as it looks on paper as the little Italian isn’t at home on grass and hasn’t yet played a competitive match on grass in 2019.
