tennishead magazine: January issue out now!

Originally published on: 05/12/12 00:00

There may be dust collecting on the courts of the ATP and WTA tours right now but we’ve got just the thing to pass the time until the action kicks off Down Under. So rustle up a hot chocolate, grab a blanket, turn on the Christmas tree lights and snuggle up beside the fire because the new issue of tennishead is OUT NOW!

Our man of the year Novak Djokovic graces the front cover once more after a stellar year that saw him win the Australian Open, collect the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London and clinch the year-end No.1 ranking. Novak's man of the year award is just one of nine we've handed out in this edition, including woman of the year, nation of the year, and story of the year.

The thrills and spills from 2012 are difficult to sum up into words so our team of photographers – Mike Frey, Ray Giubilo and Juergen Hasenkopf – have chosen their favourite images to illustrate the historic year of tennis.

Ron Bookman Media Award winner Paul Newman sat down with Juan Monaco for this issue’s big feature. The world No.12 discusses his breakthrough year and the secret behind his hometown of Tandil, a small mountain city in Argentina, which has produced a number of top pros.

Ana Ivanovic tells us how British coach Nigel Sears has helped her rediscover her best tennis in 2012, we’ve tracked down rising star David Goffin and world No. 41 Sofia Arvidsson from Sweden for exclusive interviews, Fernando Verdasco gives us the low down on his Dunlop racket and Pat Cash reflects on the drama-filled 1986 Davis Cup final between Australia and Sweden.

We dust off the tennishead crystal ball to try and predict the 13 big stories in 2013 and we also found some time to step into the television screen to take you behind the scenes at Eurosport.

Our Academy and Gear sections are, as always, jam-packed with new equipment and useful tips, including the importance of good movement when playing wheelchair tennis and the keys to surviving junior tennis. We ask the experts about going gluten-free and we break down one the game’s most beautiful backhands – Richard Gasquet’s.

And if that’s not all, our comprehensive results section ensures that you won’t have missed one bounce of the ball since the last issue.
