Teen sensation Cori Gauff given US Open wildcard

15 year old Cori Gauff has been granted a wildcard into the 2019 women’s singles at the US Open

Cori Gauff sprang into the tennis world’s view after a sensational run at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships when she made it through the qualifying before upsetting Venus Williams in the first round on Centre Court. She then went on to win 2 further matches before falling to Simona Halep in front of a packed centre court crowd.

Now Gauff will be playing in the main draw of the women’s singles in New York as she looks to build on her reputation as a future world No.1.

There was some speculation that Gauff may have to win a place in the main event via the qualifying but once it was announced that she was due to play an exhibition match during the qualifying tournament it became apparent that knew she was virtually guaranteed a wildcard.

The American crowds will be excited to see Gauff for the first time at their home major where she is being heralded as the successor to Serena Williams.

Her run at Wimbledon announced the young player onto the world tennis scene and highlighted her potential and incredible maturity for someone so young. It took eventual Wimbledon champion Simona Halep to end her run on the grass of SW19.

However, now that Gauff has accepted the US Open wildcard it will reduce the number of further tournaments she can play on the WTA Tour before she turns 16. At the moment Gauff can play 12 WTA tournaments before turning 16 after receiving a bonus 2 events due to her recent strong performances. However, she would qualify for 2 more events if she had decided to play in the US open qualifying instead of accepting the wild card into the main event at the US Open.
