The former US Open champion, who has not played since withdrawing from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells with the problem, eased back into action as she crushed Marina Erakovic 6-1 6-2.

"I'm really pleased with the way I went out there and played today," said Stosur, who won the Charleston event in 2010. "I went for my serve a lot and whenever I had the opportunity I tried to get the ball off the court.

"I probably didn't expect to win my first match back one and two. But as the match went on I felt really good and the way I was playing all came together. And of course I really enjoy playing on this court, so I always try to do my best every time I'm out there."

Next up for the Australian is Eugenie Bouchard, who knocked out Britain’s Laura Robson 6-4 3-6 6-1.

Caroline Wozniacki cruised into the third round with a 6-1 6-1 win over Sílvia Soler-Espinosa, while there were also wins for Venus Williams, Jelena Jankovic and Julia Goerges.
