Petra Kvitova celebrates

St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2020 preview

The St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy will return and run from February 10th – February 16th 2020. The tournament, which is in played in Russia, is a WTA Premier event and this will be the 11th edition.

Until 2015, St. Petersburg was played under the ITF which is a developmental tour for the WTA. It replaced the Diamond Games tournament in 2016 and has attracted popular players in recent years. In 2019, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka and Petra Kvitova took part in the event and the lineup is strong for this 2020. Players voted St. Petersburg as the best Premier event for the players in 2019.

Petra Kvitova will make her third consecutive appearance. The Czech won the tournament in her debut two years ago and can be unstoppable when she finds her rhythm. Since making her return to the tour after a horrific knife attack in 2017, Kvitova has been one of the most consistent players on tour. She won five titles in 2018, and made it to the 2019 Australian Open final. Kvitova advanced to the semi-finals of Brisbane this year and will likely be the player to beat in Russia.

Kiki Bertens might have something to say about who should be the favourite. She is the defending champion and has had some memorable battles with Kvitova. A former French Open semi-finalist, Bertens also made a strong start to the year by getting to the Brisbane quarter-finalist and nearly taking out Australian Open champion, Naomi Osaka.

Donna Vekic was the runner up last year and will be tough to beat. She thrashed Kvitova 6-4, 6-1 in their 2019 quarter-final meeting and the 23-year-old is ranked 20 in the world after reaching her highest ranking of 19 last November.
