Soderling, ranked 17th in the world and the tournament’s third seed, looked comfortable as he claimed the match 6-4 6-4 in 58 minutes. He now has the daunting task of facing top seed Juan Martin del Potro in Friday’s semi-finals after the Argentinian powered to an impressive 6-3 6-2 victory over Serbian Viktor Troicki.

The second semi-final sees American hopeful Sam Querrey take on second-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer.

Querrey dispatched Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-3 6-2, while Ferrer’s quarter-final opponent, defending champion Philipp Kohlschreiber, was forced to retire with an injured shoulder before the match had even begun.
