Frenchman Simon defeated Robbie Kendrick 6-3 7-6 (9-7) in their first-round clash but number five seed Nalbandian came unstuck against Chilean Capdeville who converted five of six break point opportunities and won 30 of 39 service points.

With Nalbandian clearly suffering from the heat, Capdeville claimed a 6-2 6-2 victory in just 54 minutes.

Sixth seed Mardy Fish also had a regulation 6-3 6-4 win over Teimuraz Gabashvili while Marc Gicquel and Oscar Hernandez both reached the second round.

In the women’s event top seed Iveta Benesova reached the second round with a three-set victory over Portugal’s Neuza Silva while Anna-Lena Groenefeld required a third-set tie-break to defeat Pauline Parmentier.

Jarmilia Groth also claimed victory.
