Sharapova starts with Williams win

The Russian, who won the Australian Open two years ago but has struggled with injuries and a lack of form since, took less than an hour and a half to see off the world number six 6-3 6-4 at the Hua Hin Centennial Invitational.

In hot conditions, Sharapova led 5-1 at one point in the first set before eventually clinching it, and then edged the second against an erratic Williams.
