The Russian will contest the women’s doubles tournament with Elena Vesnina.

The three-time grand slam champion has been sidelined since last August with a shoulder problem, forcing her to miss the 2008 US Open and the defence of her Australian Open title in January.

“I am excited to be playing competitive tennis again,” said Sharapova.

“The healing process takes time and requires things to move more slowly than I would like, but I am taking things one step at a time.”

Indian Wells tournament director Steve Simon added: “It is great to see her healthy and back on the court.

“The game has missed her and we wish her the best of luck and hope she has a great tournament.”
