Serena withdraws from Hopman Cup

A hamstring injury has forced US Open champ Serena Williams to withdraw from Januarys Hopman Cup event in Perth, which begins on January 3.

Serena Williams suffered the injury halfway through the season-ending WTA Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha.

Serena Williams place in the eight-team exhibition event will go to Meghann Shaughnessy who will partner world No.10 James Blake on team USA.

Organsers say there is no suggestion that Williams will not be fit for the Australian Open, however.

As well as the US, the Hopman Cup will feature teams from France, Australia, Italy, Germany, Slovak Republic and Taiwan.

Event chiefs have confirmed that the Russians will be represented by Marat Safin and younger sister Dinara Safina.

The news suggests Marat will continue playing tennis for the foreseeable future following months of speculation surrounding his possible retirement.
