Playing her first match since overtaking Victoria Azarenka to return to world No.1 last month, Williams dropped just two games as she eased to a 6-1 6-1 victory.

She found herself 0-40 down in the opening game after two double faults, but soon settled into her rhythm as she wrapped up a routine victory in an hour and 17 minutes.

"I don't think it was too much rust," Williams said. "I think I missed a few shots, but only because I was off footwork-wise. It's always just good to win a match and stay in the tournament and keep going."

Williams, who is bidding to win a record sixth title in Miami, will face Ayumi Morita, Heather Watson’s first-round conqueror, in the third round.

Meanwhile, fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska kicked off her title defence with a 6-3 6-2 win over Hsieh Su-wei, while Petra Kvitova and Caroline Wozniacki both advanced unscathed.
