Second seed Williams saw off China’s Yuan Meng in straight sets in the previous round and while she again took just two sets to see off her opponent at the Hisense Arena today she was made to work much harder.

Williams had started well as she raced into the lead but Dulko battled back to 5-2 and then clawed her way from triple break point to take the eighth game. However, Serena held serve in the next game to take the first set 6-3.

Dulko then twice broke serve in the second set to move ahead before the ninth game turned into something of an epic as it repeatedly went to deuce before Williams finally came out on top to break serve.

Williams then closed out to take the set and the match.
