Whether it is tennis, food or fashion, Serena and Venus Williams go together like strawberries and cream at Wimbledon. After the sisters made winning starts at this week’s Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, Serena spoke about how happy she was to see Venus back on the singles court for the first time since revealing at last year’s US Open that she is suffering from Sjogren’s syndrome, which causes joint pain, numbness and fatigue.

“She’s been through so much, and to know you can go through that and continue to play and never give up really gave me hope and inspiration,” Serena said. “She just really inspires me. And not just in tennis but in life in general. She has inspired so many people.”

Serena has changed her dietary habits to fit in with her sister, who is eating less meat and more vegetables. “We live together, so it would be kind of bad for me to bring in bad food to the house,” Serena said. “I take it upon myself to do the best I can for her. I mean, we live together. That’s my best friend, that’s everything to me, so I wouldn’t want to have anything bad for her, have her unhealthy because of me. So I do what she does – as usual.”

Serena joked that she “probably should have moved out a long time ago”. She added: “Honestly, it’s ridiculous now. We’ve kind of held each other back, but, hey, we’re in for the long run.”

As for fashion, Serena said the two sisters helped each other out all the time. “She always asks me for advice. With her latest collection, she was like: ‘What do you think?’ I was like: ‘I don’t like this, change it.’ And she changed it. So we give a lot of feedback, and she gives me feedback on my collection, too. It’s cool. It’s really fun.”
