Serena Williams has pulled out of the French Open as she continues her recovery from a foot injury and pulmonary embolism.

The 29-year-old American hasn’t played on the tour since cutting her foot on broken glass in a Munich restaurant last July before a serious health scare this year further disrupted her long-awaited return.

“While I am making good progress, unfortunately I wont be able to compete in Roland Garros as I am continuing to rehab my foot and recover from the pulmonary embolism,” said Williams.

“I am grateful for every moment I have and the fact that I have returned to the court. I am hopeful that I will be back competing this summer. Thank you for all your continued prayers.”

The 13-time Grand Slam champion has been replaced in the French Open draw by Junri Namigata of Japan, while the earlier withdrawals of Dinara Safina and Timea Bacsinszky have allowed Britain’s Anne Keothavong to sneak into the main draw.

Meanwhile, Williams’ sister Venus may not contest the French Open either after she pulled out of next week’s inaugural Brussels Open. The 30-year-old has not played since January’s Australian Open after a slow recovery from an abdominal injury.
