Williams silenced a near-capacity crowd at the Rod Laver Arena with 42 winners to claim a 6-4 6-2 victory in just over an hour.

It was a brutal display from the 28-year-old American, especially on her serve as she fired down 10 aces.

“I can’t believe it. Sam beat me last time convincingly,” Williams said.

“I think my serve was pretty good.

“I had to come out strong because when you are playing someone like Sam, you have to play this good.

“I especially had to do that in front of this crowd or I would have been going home.”

Williams is yet to concede a set in reaching the quarter-finals.
