Serena Williams overcame a sluggish start to defeat Simona Halep 3-6 6-2 6-1 and set up a third round clash with either Maria Kirilenko or Tamarine Tanasugarn at Wimbledon.

The defending champion and seventh seed quickly slipped behind in the opening set as she struggled to find her range and potency on her serve, but come the second, pulled her game together and began battering winners past the 19-year-old Romanian from the baseline.

Williams, who had succumbed to her emotions after winning against Aravane Rezai in just her second tournament since overcoming career-threatening illness, this time remained composed after victory. She departed Court 2 with an appreciative wave, but took issue with tournament organisers in her post-match presser for shunting her away from the main arena.

“They seem to like putting me and Venus out on court two for some reason,” said the disgruntled American, who was controversially put on the same court last year during the Queen’s visit. “Obviously they’re not going to change,” she added.
