The world No.1 was in devastating form as she stormed to a 6-0 6-0 victory at Flushing Meadows, firing 20 winners and dropping just 18 points as she romped to victory in 52 minutes.

"I played well – I played really well. I was just more focused than anything," said Williams, who is through to her 24th Grand Slam semi-final. "I like to believe there is always room for improvement though."

Williams, who has lost just 13 games in her opening five matches, will expect to meet a stiffer challenge in the shape of former French Open champion Li Na, through to her first US Open semi-final after a hard-fought win over Ekaterina Makarova.

Makarova, who had upset Sabine Lisicki and Agnieszka Radwanska in her two previous matches, battled back from a set and a break down to take the No.5 seed to three sets, but Li eventually prevailed 6-4 6-7(5) 6-2.

"She's a great challenge," Williams said of her next opponent, against whom she owns a 8-1 head-to-head record. "She moves really well. We've always played really close. Maybe next time we play she might want to go from close to a win.”
