Stosur appeared to be headed for victory when serving at 5-4 in the final set, she raced out to a 40-0 lead.

However, she failed to convert any of her four match points, allowing Williams back into the game.

Williams grabbed the chance with open arms and held serve before breaking Stosur’s serve to secure the match 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 in two hours 26 minutes.

Fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova also survived a scare, coming from a set down to beat Peng Shuai 3-6 6-1 6-3.
