Wimbledon semi-finalist Flipkens, who had beaten Venus Williams 0-6 6-4 6-2 in the first round, was unable to complete the double as she bowed out with a 6-0 6-3 defeat.

"After I won the first set I definitely thought about Venus, and I thought about what a good comeback Kirsten had, so I thought, 'I'm not going to get over-confident'," Williams said. "I was just trying to stay really focused as well as really intense at that moment."

Agnieszka Radwanska also progressed to the last eight with a straight sets victory over Sloane Stephens, while Petra Kvitova got the better of Sam Stosur.

Playing in her first tournament since winning Wimbledon, Marion Bartoli was forced to retire from her match against Magdalena Rybarikova with an abdominal injury.

China’s Li Na battled past Ana Ivanovic 3-6 6-1 7-6(5) while Sara Errani and Dominika Cibulkova also reached the quarter-finals at the Rexall Centre.
