Spain’s Suarez Navarro went down 6-1 6-7 (3/7) 6-4 to Klara Zakopalova of Czech Republic while New Zealand’s Erakovic was comprehensively beaten 6-2 6-0 by Samantha Stosur of Australia.

There were no such worries for top-seeded Russian Maria Kirilenko – a 6-2 6-0 winner over Lenka Wienerova of Slovakia – or Estonian third seed Kaia Kanepi, who overcame Japanese qualifier Rika Fujiwara 6-2 6-7 (5/7) 6-0.

Eighth seed Chan Yung-Jan of Chinese Taipei came from a set down to defeat Italian Mara Santangelo 1-6 6-3 6-4 and American Jill Craybas saw off China’s Yuan Meng without losing a game.

Also through to round two are Russian duo Ekaterina Makarova and Anastasia Pivovarova, Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova, Canada’s Stephanie Dubois and Japan’s Ayumi Morita.
