Sanchez, a shock winner over Caroline Wozniacki in the Collector Swedish Open, was even more dominant against the French player, winning 6-2 6-2 to set up a second-round meeting with Tathiana Garbin.

Eighth seed Gisela Dulko was another casualty, falling 6-4 6-1 to Germany’s Anna-Lena Groenefeld, but there were no problems for top seed and home favourite Flavia Pennetta, a 6-2 6-3 winner over Arantxa Parra Santonja.

Sixth seed Ekaterina Makarova was a 6-3 6-1 winner over American Jill Craybas while there were also wins for Yaroslava Shvedova, Patricia Mayr, Nuria Llagostera Vives and qualifier Arantxa Rus.
