The Russian, who rose to the top of the rankings a little over a month ago, has reached two grand slam finals but is yet to land a Major.
“I think if I continue playing like I have been for the last three weeks, I have a very good chance,” she said.
“I just want to focus one step at a time. I don’t know when it (a Major title) will come. Maybe here.
“This year I have played a few more tournaments and I’ve been playing better than last year. So I’m really looking forward to the start of the French Open.”
Safina will begin her campaign with a first-round match against London’s Anne Keothavong.
The British number one this week reached the semi-finals of the Warsaw Open, where she lost to Alona Bondarenko in straight sets, but it will be a tough ask to oust Safina.
“It’s probably the toughest draw you could ask for,” said Keothavong.
“She’s definitely the favourite for the title and she’s a player who’s done consistently the best this year.
“It’s definitely a tough draw but I’ve got nothing to lose. I can just go out there and enjoy it.”
