Roger Federer smiles at Shanghai 2019

Roger Federer confirms he will play Japan 2020 Olympics

Roger Federer has officially announced what everyone was guessing, that he will play the Tokyo Olympics tennis event (even though he’s not officially qualified to play!)

Roger Federer has one more goal to achieve in his tennis career which is to win the Olympic singles Gold Medal that has eluded him for his whole career, and his last chance to do this will now be at the Japan Olympics in 2020.

Federer has confirmed his attendance at a sponsors event where he was quoted as saying, “I’ve been debating with my team for a few weeks now, months actually, what I should do in the summer time (of 2020) after Wimbledon and before the US Open.

“At the end of the day my heart decided I would love to play the Olympic Games again.

“I carried the flag twice for Switzerland in Athens and Beijing, I’ve got a gold and a silver, and I would love to play again so I’m very excited.”

Federer’s attendance means the tournament is likely to feature the Big 4 in men’s tennis over the past 15 years, himself, Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray.

Murray holds the men’s singles gold from the Brazil Olympics and he also won gold at the London 2012 Olympics which were played in London at the all England Lawn Tennis Club aka Wimbledon. At that tournament he beat Federer in the final.

Federer did triumph in the mens doubles event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics where he partnered Stan Wawrinka to victory. He’s also won the Davis Cup in 2014 and the Hopman Cup three time.

Rafa Nadal won the men’s singles Gold Medal at those 2008 Olympics in Beijing but Novak Djokovic has never managed to lift an Olympic gold medal but will probably be favourite next year in Japan.
