Roddick injured a hip during his epic five-set loss to Roger Federer on Sunday and will not be available for the tie in Porec. Mardy Fish will take his place.

“Andy has been a stalwart for this team the past nine years, and his dedication to Davis Cup and his team-mates is unquestioned,” US captain Patrick McEnroe said.

He added: “Mardy is a Davis Cup veteran and we appreciate his willingness to join the team on short notice. He has been playing well and we are glad to have him back in the singles line-up.”

The US team will now be Fish and James Blake in the singles, and the Bryan brothers, Mike and Bob, in the doubles.

Ivo Karlovic and Marin Cilic are expected to lead the hosts on the clay.
