Roddick needed just 61 minutes to continue his dominance over Ginepri, posting a 6-2 6-3 victory as the world number six improved his career record against his rival to 9-1.

Roddick overpowered his unseeded opponent with his serve, firing down 11 aces and winning 77% of first-serve points. He also converted four out of 12 break-point chances.

The 26-year-old, who won the event in 2002 and has reached the final on two other occasions, will face eighth seed Sam Querrey in the quarter-finals.

Querrey also had a comfortable time as he eased to a 6-1 6-2 triumph over Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus.

Mardy Fish (seven) was the only seeded player not to survive Thursday’s action after suffering a 6-2 6-4 defeat to Christophe Rochus of Belgium.

Second seed Juan Martin Del Potro and fifth seed Radek Stepanek both cruised to straight-set triumphs in their second-round matches.

Del Potro defeated Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-3 6-4, while Stepanek recorded a 6-2 6-4 win over Austrian Stefan Koubek.

Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, who had to qualify for the event, secured a 6-2 7-6 (7/4) victory over fellow Australian Chris Guccione.

Russian Igor Kunitsyn and Dudi Sela from Israel were the other unseeded players to advance.
